French commander says religion is not an issue in the CAR

15 January 2014

The Western media's focus on the religious aspect of the conflict in the Central African Republic (CAR) is totally misplaced, according to General Francisco Soriano, the commander of the French intervention force in the country.

Briefing journalists via video link on 16 January, he said that, in his view, differences between the Christian majority and Muslims, who make up around 10% of the population, "do not constitute the heart of the problem".

Gen Soriano said he had held long talks with leaders from both faiths, including the CAR's Catholic archbishop and chief imam. "These religious leaders who work together do not share the vision [of religious conflict] that is portrayed by Western media."
