Spanish military to be hit by further cuts

09 January 2014

The Spanish Ministry of Defence (MoD) is to base its future operability on a deployable 'action' force of only 10,000 personnel across all three services, according to local media reports.

Although the MoD declined to comment on the reports, military sources confirmed to IHS Jane's on 7 January that the information is "fundamentally correct" as the services lean toward a "well-equipped, highly mobile nucleus." Details of the cuts were first published by Spanish newspaper El País, on 6 January.

The MoD has also shed a quarter of its Navy AV-8B Harrier II force as it attempts to adhere to the budgetary cuts, according to El País.
