UK parliament blocks Syria intervention

29 August 2013

The UK Parliament has voted against military action in Syria, effectively blocking the country from taking part in strikes against the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

In a late night vote on 29 August, the House of Commons voted against the government by 285-272. The government had been seeking support for military action against Syria if UN weapons inspectors report on 31 August that chemical weapons had indeed been used during an incident in Damascus suburbs on 21 August, where at least 300 people are reported to have been killed.

The defeat comes as an embarrassment for Prime Minister David Cameron, who had appeared as one of the strongest international voices in favour of a military response to apparent chemical weapons use by the Syrian government.
