Electric Boat to assist in Spanish S 80 submarine programme

29 May 2013

General Dynamics Electric Boat (GDEB) has been called in to help resolve design problems in the Spanish Navy's new S 80 submarine programme.

As reported by IHS Jane's on 14 May, the design problems have generated expected delays of up to two years in the delivery of the four S 80 boats, which had been scheduled to enter service from March 2015 onwards.

The Spanish Ministry of Defence stated that GDEB's work would include checking the submarines' propulsion systems. In revealing details of the delay in May, the Armada Española and state-owned shipbuilder Navantia spoke only of weight and balance problems.
