The Uruguayan National Army has selected the 9 mm Glock 17 pistol, to be assembled locally, as a replacement for its legacy Browning Hi-Power and Colt 1911 side arms.
An initial contract has been signed for the assembly at army workshops of a first batch of 1,500 pistols from kits provided by Glock.
However, the project is meant to produce many more handguns to fulfil the needs of Uruguay's army as well as other national military services and law enforcement organisations. Exports to South American countries are also envisioned.
It is expected that follow-on contracts for the Glock pistols' assembly will include locally manufactured parts.
