The Indonesian Navy is interested in acquiring the Marina Militare's assault helicopter carrier/aircraft carrier ITS Giuseppe Garibaldi (C 551) , Janes understands .
The carrier, launched in 1985, was placed in reserve in October 2024. A deal could possibly include the transfer of some of the Italian Navy's 30 AV-8B Harrier II short take-off and vertical landing (STOVL) aircraft, an Italian Navy source told Janes .
A transfer would be in line with the Indonesian Navy's Minimum Essential Force (MEF) plan, which includes at least four helicopter-carrying vessels, four frigates, and several missile patrol boats.
The Italian Navy's new multi-purpose landing helicopter dock (LHD) Trieste has replaced Giuseppe Garibaldi and will take the role of flagship for Italy's amphibious task group.
Fincantieri announced in March 2024 that it had signed a EUR1.18 billion (USD1.23 billion) contract with the Indonesian Ministry of Defense (MoD) for two multirole offshore patrol ships (Pattugliatore Polivalente d'Altura: PPA). Giuseppe Garibaldi aside, the vessels are set to be the largest warships in service with the Indonesian Navy once they are commissioned in the latter part of 2025.
Neither the Italian nor Indonesian MoDs had replied to requests for comment at the time of publishing.
