Chinese state-run media have disclosed additional details of the People's Liberation Army Navy's (PLAN's) Type 054B (Jiangkai III) guided‑missile frigate, outlining enhancements intended to support long‑range surface warfare, anti‑submarine warfare (ASW), and air‑defence operations.
Citing information from state broadcaster China Central Television (CCTV), China's Global Times newspaper reported on 29 March that the Type 054B incorporates an improved architecture featuring enhanced weapons, reduced‑signature design, upgraded command systems, and improved propulsion performance.
The PLAN commissioned the first and second Type 054B frigates – Luohe and Qinzhou – in January 2025 and May 2025 respectively. In January, Global Times reported that Luohe had reached initial operational capability.
Compared with the Type 054A (Jiangkai II) class, which has been in PLAN service since 2008, the Type 054B incorporates improved sensor integration and platform shaping intended to reduce radar cross‑section (RCS), Global Times reported.
The Type 054B class also has “greater propulsion efficiency, lower fuel consumption, extended range, and an expanded combat radius”, the newspaper added. It reported that these improvements are intended to support operations at greater distances from mainland China.
Global Times also reported that the frigates employ a “flattened” command architecture, supported by advanced computing, algorithms, and artificial intelligence (AI) tools. These systems are intended to reduce detection and engagement blind spots in air-defence operations, it reported.
According to Global Times, Qinzhou has been trialled alongside Type 055 and Type 052D destroyers, and amphibious assault ships, particularly to function as a “protective escort” during ASW missions.
