DSEI 2021: Babcock outlines Arrowhead 140 bid for Greece

Babcock has outlined to Janes its approach to the four pillars required for Greece's naval procurement programme, for which it is bidding the Arrowhead 140 frigate.

Speaking to Janes at DSEI 2021in London, Babcock vice-president for Marine Business Development Jonathan Walton said that the company had submitted a competitive bid at the end of July that will involve building the vessels in Greece at the Scaramanga and Elefsis shipyards, taking advantage of the modular block-build approach for the vessels. The Arrowyard concept, which was launched at DSEI on 15 September, will be utilised to deliver the build concept to Greece.

Walton also said that the company hoped to leverage its experience on the maintenance, support, and upgrades of MEKO 200 vessels for the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) and Royal New Zealand Navy, as well as its experience in working on the UK Royal Navy's (RN's) Type 23 Duke-class frigates, as part of the second pillar of the Hellenic Navy's requirement.

AUSA 2021: Bell selects Rolls-Royce engine for V-280

Bell has selected Rolls-Royce's AE 1107F engine to serve as the propulsion system on the V-280 Valor tiltrotor if the programme wins the US Army's Future Long-Range Assault Aircraft (FLRAA) competition.

John Shade, Rolls-Royce executive vice-president of business development and future programmes, told Janes on 11 October at the Association of the United States Army's (AUSA's) convention that the AE 1107F is a modification of the AE 1107C 7,000 shp turboshaft that powers the Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey tiltrotor. The company's AE product family is used on a variety of military aircraft such as the Northrop Grumman RQ-4 Global Hawk and MQ-4C Triton, and the Boeing MQ-25A Stingray unmanned aerial vehicles, he said.

The V-280 was initially powered by a pair of General Electric (GE) T64-GE-419 free turbine turboshaft engines during the Joint Multi-Role Technology Demonstrator phase. Ryan Ehinger, Bell vice-president and programme director for FLRAA/V-280, told Janes

AUSA 2021: Japan seeking more military co-development work with US DoD

The Japanese Ministry of Defense (MoD) has asked the US Department of Defense (DoD) to consider areas for new co-development work, ranging from acquisition programmes to science and technology (S&T) projects, the Pentagon's chief technology officer said on 12 October.

“They're interested in hypersonics, they're interested in quantum; and out of the wide spectrum of their interests we agreed to have a follow-up meeting to try to flesh out, out of their multitude of interest areas, how shall we move forward in co-development,” Heidi Shyu, undersecretary of defence for research and engineering (OUSD(R&E)), told reporters at the annual Association of the United States Army conference in Washington, DC.

Shyu noted that Japan co-operates with the Pentagon on one development programme already, although she did not name the programme.

Japan has eight ballistic missile defence-capable destroyers with the Aegis combat system, and has co-operated with the United States in developing technologies for the Standard Missile-3 (SM-3) Block IIA interceptor, with Japan providing money and technology work via a co-operative research effort under a US-Japan memorandum of agreement signed in 1999.

Update: Czech Republic, Israel sign SPYDER air defence agreement

Israel and the Czech Republic signed a government-to-government agreement covering the delivery of four Rafael SPYDER air-defence systems on 5 October.

The agreement was signed in Prague by Czech Deputy Minister for Armaments and Acquisitions Lubor Koudelka and Israeli Ministry of Defense (MoD) Director Major General (res) Amir Eshel.

“This is the first time that Israel will deliver a full air-defence system to a NATO country, and we are proud and thrilled that the Czech Republic is the one,” Eshel said.

[Czech] Army experts chose SPYDER as the most suitable in the assessment of nine ground air defence systems,” Czech Minister of Defense Lubomír Metnar said.

While the Israeli MoD put the value of the agreement at about USD520 million, the Czech MoD said it would pay CZK13.7 billion (USD624 million) after negotiating the cost down by CZK2 billion. It added that the Czech defence industry would carry out 38% of the work, naming its own Military Technical Institute and RETIA, which makes and modernises radars and command-and-control systems, as the main partners.
