Türkiye is already improving the Tayfun surface-to-surface missile (SSM) as the first weapons enter the Turkish Land Forces inventory.
The Turkish Ministry of National Defence (MND) announced during its weekly press briefing on 20 May that, as part of ongoing efforts to further enhance the advanced technological capabilities and deterrent power of the Turkish Armed Forces, the Tayfun Block-2 missile had been accepted into the inventory of the Turkish Land Forces Command for the first time.
A member of the Tayfun SSM family developed by Roketsan, Tayfun Block-2 was first tested in October 2022. While its range has not been disclosed by Roketsan, in November 2022 President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan told a selected group of journalists that the range of the missile was 561 km.
The Tayfun Block-2 missile is 6.5 m long, with a 61 cm diameter, and weighs 2,300 kg. The weight of its pre-shaped fragmentation warhead has not been disclosed. According to Roketsan, the missile has a circular error probable (CEP) of less than 10 m, indicating high precision. It features a Go-Onto-Location-in-Space (GOLIS) guidance system, making it suitable for strikes on stationary targets such as command centres, air defence missile systems, and critical military infrastructure. The transporter-erector-launcher (TEL) vehicle carries two missiles.
