NATO has declared its Multinational Multi Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) Unit (MMU) to be fully operational, with nine of the planned 12 Airbus A330 MRTT (KC-30M in alliance service) aircraft now in the Multinational MRTT Fleet (MMF).
Announced on 30 March, the full operating capability (FOC) milestone came three years after initial operating capability (IOC) was declared in 2023.
“FOC is not merely a formal designation; it confirms that the unit can consistently deliver air-to-air refuelling, strategic airlift, and aeromedical evacuation whenever required. This means that the MMU can conduct two deployments simultaneously — a short-term and a long-term deployment — anywhere in the world,” the MMU said.
Operated out of Eindhoven Air Base in the Netherlands, from Cologne-Wahn Air Base in Germany, and at Karup Air Base in Denmark, the MMF sees Belgium, the Czech Republic, Germany, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and Norway share the use of nine KC-30M aircraft, with a tenth to be delivered in 2027. Two more aircraft were ordered in June 2025 to accommodate Denmark and Sweden joining the MMU, with deliveries due in 2028 and 2029.
