China bolsters QBZ191 assault rifle capabilities

China South Industries Group Corporation (CSGC) has upgraded its 5.8×42 mm QBZ191 assault rifle, state-owned China Central Television (CCTV) reported on 30 June.

Footage posted by CCTV on its official social media channel shows the QBZ191, which is a part of CSGC's Type 20 series of rifles, fitted with a full-length rail on top to accommodate additional electro-optical sights such as telescopic or night vision. Previously, the QBZ191 rifle was fitted with a folding backup iron sight (BUIS) attached to the upper receiver rail.

The additionally attached optical sights enhance the QBZ191 rifle's precision, enabling it to fire 20 rounds with an accuracy of up to 3 cm, CCTV said.

According to CCTV, the QBZ191 rifle fires 5.8 mm bullets at an effective range of 800 m, which facilitates medium- and close-range combat.

Citing a CSGC official, CCTV said the rifle will undergo further enhancements to meet the People's Liberation Army's (PLA's) requirements. The company will also conduct additional trials before delivering the updated QBZ191 to the PLA and the People's Armed Police.

“The QBZ191 uses a conventional configuration with greatly improved ergonomics, ambidextrous usability, and better reliability across different environments,” state-owned newspaper Global Times said, citing a CSGC official.

According to Global Times, the QBZ191 will replace the PLA's in-service QBZ95 rifles. The QBZ95, manufactured by Norinco, is a family of bullpup assault rifles chambered in 5.8×42 mm cartridge.

The QBZ191 rifle was first displayed during the National Day parade in Beijing in October 2019. At the time, the weapon was seen in service with the PLA Air Force (PLAAF), indicating the future adoption of the weapon throughout the army, navy, and air force.
