The Bangladesh Air Force (BAF) has signed a letter of intent (LOI) with Leonardo SpA for procuring Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft.
The LOI was signed on 9 December at Air Force Headquarters in Dhaka, according to the Bangladesh Ministry of Defence's (MoD's) Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Directorate. Through the LOI, Leonardo “will supply Eurofighter Typhoon fighter aircraft” to the BAF to fill the service's requirement for a modern multirole combat aircraft, ISPR said.
The ISPR has not specified how many Typhoons or which variant of the aircraft it seeks to procure. The directorate did not respond to a Janes request for information at the time of publication. A Leonardo spokesperson said the company “cannot elaborate further” on the matter.
“At this stage, the only source of information is the official statement from Bangladesh,” the spokesperson said.
Bangladesh first expressed interest in acquiring the Eurofighter in 2015–16. In February 2017, the country issued a tender to procure eight twin‐engine multirole combat aircraft for the BAF, with an option to buy four more in future, according to Janes data. In 2023 Bangladesh announced that it was considering the Eurofighter Typhoon or Dassault Rafale for acquisition.
In May 2025, Chief of Staff of the Air Force Air Chief Marshal Hasan Mahmood Khan visited Leonardo's facility at Sergemine, following his attendance of the AeroSpace Power Conference 2025 in Rome, according to the BAF. ACM Khan evaluated the Typhoon while at Sergemine, according to the BAF.
The LOI was signed in the presence of ACM Khan and Italy's ambassador to Bangladesh, H E Antonio Alessandro.
