Australia's maritime air patrol capabilities have been boosted by the arrival of its 14th and final Boeing P-8A Poseidon aircraft, alongside a new aerial surveillance contract with a US-based company to strengthen maritime reconnaissance and border security.
The new Poseidon arrived at RAAF Base Edinburgh in South Australia on 26 May and has been deployed with the Royal Australian Air Force's (RAAF's) No 11 Squadron, the DoD said on 27 May. It added that the acquisition marks a milestone “in strengthening Australia's ability to conduct anti‑submarine warfare (ASW), maritime strike, and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) missions.”
According to Chief of Air Force Air Marshal Stephen Chappell, the RAAF's Poseidon fleet underpins Australian efforts “to maintain awareness of its maritime domain”, while enhancing “Australia's capacity to detect, deter and respond to threats across its maritime approaches”.
The completion of the 14‑aircraft fleet “enables higher availability, increased resilience and the ability to deliver sustained operations in support of Australia's security and regional stability”, the DoD added.
According to the DoD, the fleet will also receive upgrades, including Increment Three Block Two modifications, and deeper integration with allies and international partners.
Meanwhile, Metrea, a Washington DC-headquartered defence services provider, announced on 22 May that it has been selected to enhance Australia's border surveillance capabilities with additional aircraft.
Under the agreement, Metrea will partner with the Australian Department of Home Affairs and Australian Border Force (ABF) to monitor the country's maritime and border regions.
