Saab revealed that its Giraffe 1X three-dimensional X-band search radar has a new maximum range of 250 km, and can track up to 2,000 targets, a company representative told Janes during a media briefing at the Eurosatory 2026 exhibition, held in Paris from 15-19 June. The announcement coincided with a new order from Denmark for Giraffe 1X systems.

As well as the range and target tracks increase, Pontus Djerf, head of global marketing and sales for Saab's Sensor Systems division, said in the briefing that the radar, designed for both static and mobile ground-based applications, can be deployed in under three minutes and integrated with retractable masts to elevate the radar array to 16 m above ground level.

The Giraffe 1X has several configurations and is platform-agnostic, provided that integration requirements for size, weight, and power are met. As examples of its multi-platform use Djerf cited naval integration as part of the Sea Giraffe Agile Multi-Beam Digital (AMB D) system mounted on Sweden's Visby-class corvettes. He also cited a 10 ft module with a telescopic mast mounted on an FFG Flensburger Fahrzeugbau Armoured Combat Support Vehicle (ACSV); and a 20 ft module integrated onto an 8×8 truck platform with a 16 m retractable mast. The system will receive continuous updates throughout its service life, according to Saab.
