French defence company Thales unveiled TRAC SIGMA, its new military and civilian air traffic control (ATC) and surveillance radar, it announced in a press release on 13 May.

TRAC SIGMA is an L-band (1–2 GHz) primary radar with the capability to discriminate between aircraft at an extended range of up to 300 km. It can help ensure the 3 n miles (5.5 km) separation distance necessary for civilian and military air traffic control in major terminal areas is maintained, the company said. The radar, according to Thales, is resistant to jamming and interference, and has been updated for improved discrimination of small aircraft. It has 3D detection capabilities that allow for better co-ordination and its dual-use capabilities provide segregated and shared data at the same time.

The new technology is a member of the TRAC Primary Surveillance Radar (PSR) family. Thales' primary radars include STAR NG and TRAC NG. The scan rate for TRAC NG ranges from 5 to 7.5 RPM with 256 n miles (474 km) coverage over 1 m 2 radar cross section (RCS) target. It has an operating frequency of 1.25–1.35 GHz and a bandwidth of 30 MHz.
