The Luftwaffe showcased its Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) Heron TP unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) at the ILA Berlin Airshow, with the type making its flying debut at the biennial event running from 10 to 14 June 2026. This milestone came 23 months after the Heron TP made is maiden flight in German airspace in May 2024.
Known as the German Heron TP (GHTP), the Airbus Defence and Space (DS)-operated intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) UAV was flown over the show site, capturing high-resolution aerial imagery that was shown live on the exhibition grounds' large screens.
The GHTP is configured with electro-optic/infrared (EO/IR) sensors and imaging radar systems to support its ISR tasks. Specifically, the aircraft has been cleared to carry the IAI (Tamam) M-19HD EO sensor turret, which includes zoom and spotter high-definition (HD) day cameras, an HD IR zoom camera, laser designator, laser rangefinder, laser pointer, near-IR laser illuminator, electron-multiplying charge-coupled device camera, and shortwave IR camera. Satellite communications (satcom) and Bundeswehr data/voice encryption systems are also part of the mission fit.
Based at Jagel (also known as Schleswig Air Base) in the far north of Germany, the GHTP has both an overland and maritime role, and can also be configured to conduct signals intelligence (SIGINT) missions.
