Joint Strike Missile demand helps drive Kongsberg backlog

Australia will produce Joint Strike Missiles locally, and orders from Germany, the US and Canada have contributed to Kongsberg's Q2 2026 results. (Kongsberg)

Orders for Kongsberg's Joint Strike Missile air-launched munition helped the company take new orders worth NOK17 billion (USD1.8 billion), it revealed in its second quarter 2026 results, released in July.

Compared to the company's Q2 2025 order intake of NOK11.2 billion, that marks an increase of 52.5%.

The company attributes this increase to new orders placed across its three new business areas. Chief among its successes was repeat orders from the US and Germany for the Joint Strike Missile, with Canada becoming the sixth country to select it for potential future orders.

In April 2026 Kongsberg carved off its maritime technology business to become a distinct company called Kongsberg Maritime. Its restructure has left three main divisions: Defence Systems, Missiles & Aerostructures, and Discovery. Kongsberg Defence Systems' role in the Type 212 Common Design Submarine, (supplying Orcca combat-system elements through its joint venture with TKMS, kta Naval Systems) which has been selected for the Canadian Patrol Submarine programme, was identified by the company as an area potentially contributing to future results.

Another area where Kongsberg has seen high demand for its products is air defence, with Belgium ordering the National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System (NASAMS) system. Though not formalised and so not included in Q2 order intake, in the quarter Kongsberg announced an approximately USD400 million agreement with Raytheon for NASAMS deliveries to Kuwait.
