A memorandum of understanding (MOU) between Patria and Babcock is intended to provide Patria's 6×6 vehicle for the British Army's Land Mobility Programme (LMP) in the medium category, Patria told Janes at Defence iQ's International Armoured Vehicles 2025 conference, held in Farnborough, UK, from 21 to 23 January.
According to the agreement, Patria will lead the design and development of the system, providing bespoke enhancements to suit army requirements. Patria has some ideas on these, Iiro Heikkilä, Patria ISP Oy's business development director, told Janes, adding any enhancements will flow from which variants and designs are required.
Because of the modularity of Patria 6×6, it can be configured to a number of roles, including armoured personnel carrier (APC), command-and-control (C2), reconnaissance, forward observation, ground-based air defence (GBAD), mortar carrier using Patria's remote-controlled 120 mm NEMO mortar, and medical evacuation (medevac), Hugo Vanbockryck, senior vice-president, market area Europe of Patria, told Janes.
A medevac variant of the 6×6 is not fielded, but Patria would develop one based on the Patria 8×8 armoured modular vehicle (AMV) medevac variant if needed, Heikkilä said.
Production
The 6×6 is currently in production under the multinational Common Armoured Vehicle System (CAVS) programme, with Patria the programme's prime contractor. Finland and Latvia launched the CAVS programme in 2020 and were joined by Sweden in 2022, with Germany joining the programme's research and development agreement in May 2024.
Patria has received orders for over 800 Patria 6×6 vehicles of which already over 200 have been delivered, with further deliveries ongoing, and vehicles already in operational use.
