Spain and Türkiye signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on 20 December related to the Turkish Aerospace (TA) Hürjet advanced jet trainer aircraft.

Signed between the Spanish Ministry of Defence (MoD) and the Turkish Presidency of Defence Industries, the MOU forms the basis of bilateral co-operation on the Jet Training Aircraft Project.

“This important agreement is an indication of Türkiye's goal of developing independent technologies, as well as a sign of strong co-operation with friendly and allied countries,” secretary of Turkish Defence Industries Haluk Görgün said.

While Görgün did not reference the Hürjet in his statement, Spain recently evaluated the Turkish-built aircraft for its Northrop EF-5M Freedom Fighter replacement programme.

During that evaluation at Torrejón Air Base in August, Turkish media linked a possible Spanish procurement of the Hürjet with a transfer of six contracted but unrequired Spanish Airbus A400M transport aircraft to Türkiye.
