The Royal Thai Navy (RTN) has awarded a contract to Spanish company Indra to procure a Lanza 3D long-range air surveillance radar to enhance defence of one of its key naval facilities.

Indra will deploy the radar at the RTN's Sattahip Naval Base located north of the Gulf of Thailand in Chonburi province, the company announced on 6 April.

The Lanza radar can detect a range of threats in airspace and surrounding waters of the strategically important Sattahip Naval Base including low radar cross-section (RCS) platforms such as small unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), Indra said.

Indra added, “The [radar] system is complemented by several command-and-control (C2) stations, also supplied by Indra, which provide … operational flexibility and will facilitate task distribution and prioritisation in order to ensure effective protection of adjacent coastal areas and airspace.”

The L-band radar has an operating frequency of 1–2 GHz and employs active electronically scanned array (AESA) transmit/receive modules (TRMs), Indra said.

Indra has not disclosed which variant of the Lanza radar it will supply to the RTN. Janes data shows that all Lanza radar variants have a range of more than 300 km.

Indra had not responded to Janes request for more information at the time of publication.
