The UK will deploy the Sky Sabre air defence system to Poland and 100 personnel to operate it, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) tweeted on 17 March. The ministry said the deployment was requested by Poland.
The MoD said, “Sky Sabre has unprecedented speed, accuracy, performance and target acquisition, which will significantly enhance Poland's air defences.” UK Defence Secretary Ben Wallace added that the deployment would help Poland “protect her airspace from any further aggression from Russia”.
The announcement came after Wallace met Polish Minister of National Defence Mariusz Błaszczak in Warsaw on 17 March.
Poland's Ministry of National Defence quoted Wallace on its website on 17 March as saying Sky Sabre “is also a system that that we will develop together with Poland in the future”.
Błaszczak said, “We are interested in co-operation related to anti-aircraft and anti-missile defence. This is the Narew programme run by Poland.”
