US Army Reserve buys JLTV driver trainers from Doron Precision Systems

by Giles Ebbutt

Doron Precision Systems has been awarded a contract to supply seven Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV) simulators to the US Army Reserve (USAR), the company announced on 19 January 2021.

The simulators, called the 550JLTVplus, will be installed at “multiple locations” and the value of the contract was not disclosed. Doron has previously supplied 39 660Truck simulators to the Reserve.

Launched at the 2019 Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation and Education Conference (I/ITSEC) in Orlando, the simulator, which is mounted on a three degrees of freedom (3-DoF) motion platform, is based on the technology used in Doron’s existing commercial-off-the shelf (COTS) 550plus driving simulation system with the addition of the JLTV vehicle dynamics and behaviour model that Doron developed. It uses the same instructor/operator station as the 660Truck.

Doron developed the 550JLTVplus as a private venture in partnership with Oshkosh, the JLTV manufacturer, which is supplying original parts. According to the announcement, it “offers a comprehensive virtual training environment with several challenging terrain features such as rough trails, steep inclines, side hills, moguls, and a river to cross, and also features advanced dynamic terrain effects including driving through mud, sand, and water”. The virtual environment is a Doron proprietary development.

Michael Stricek, Doron senior vice-president, told Janes that the seven simulators will be delivered in the first quarter of 2021. He said that the USAR had “expressed interest for additional simulators in the future”, and that “several other US military customers” have also expressed interest. He added that the 550JLTVplus simulator is being offered internationally to customers who have already purchased or plan to purchase JLTVs.
