US approves Eurofighter weapons for Kuwait

The US government has approved the sale of weapons to Kuwait for use aboard the country's Eurofighter Typhoon combat aircraft, deliveries of which were recently commenced.

Announced by the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) on 21 July, the State Department approval covers a raft of air-to-air and air-to-surface weaponry for an estimated USD397 million.

“This proposed sale will support the foreign policy and national security objectives of the United States by helping to improve the infrastructure of a major non-NATO ally that has been an important force for political stability and economic progress in the Middle East,” the DSCA said in its notification.

Specific armaments listed in the approval comprise 60 AIM-120 C-7/8 Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAMs); 250 Mk-84 2,000 lb general-purpose bombs; 501 Mk-83 1,000 lb general-purpose bombs; 350 KMU-556 Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) tail kits for GBU-31V1 2,000 lb bombs; 702 MXU-667 Air Foil Groups for GBU-48 Enhanced Paveway II (EPW-II) 1,000 lb bombs; and 702 MAU-210 Enhanced Computer Control Groups (ECCG) for GBU-48 EPW-II 1,000 lb bombs.

Other items included inert munitions, training devices, spares, and support.
