Thales has won a contract to support the S1850M radar in use with specific NATO navies.

On behalf of the French, Italian, and British ministries of defence (MoDs), the Organisation for Joint Armament Co-operation (OCCAR) has signed a service contract with Thales for the support and maintenance of the company's S1850M long-range air surveillance radar.

The new three-year service contract comprises delivering support services such as desk support and on-site technical assistance, and implementation of the company's ‘Customer Portal'.

An annual obsolescence scan, health check, and dedicated “customer days” for representatives from the three navies and OCCAR will be provided, as well as specific monitoring and configuration management, the company said.

Thales did not respond to Janes at the time of publication.

Under the terms of the contract, two optional years can be exercised if required.

Thales S1850M is an electronically stabilised L-band (1–2 GHz) 3D air and surface surveillance and target designation radar intended for medium and large surface ships. It can achieve a 70° elevation angle, enables automatic detection and tracking of air targets up to 400 km away, and allows for long-range volume search, if vessels are equipped with the Principal Anti-Air Missile System (PAAMS).

Systems have been fitted to the French and Italian Navy Horizon-class frigates, the Royal Navy's Type 45 (Daring-class) destroyers, and aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth.
