The United States has approved the sale of Lockheed Martin MH-60R Seahawk maritime helicopters to Spain.

The State Department approval, which was announced by the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) on 15 March, covers eight MH-60R helicopters, plus associated equipment, weapons, and services for an estimated USD950 million.

“The proposed sale will improve Spain's capability to meet current and future threats. The MH-60R Multi-Mission Helicopter will provide the capability to perform anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare missions along with the ability to perform secondary missions, including vertical replenishment, search-and-rescue, and communications relay and will bolster the Spanish Navy's ability to support NATO and remain interoperable with the US and the NATO alliance,” the DSCA said.

The Spanish Navy (Armada Española) fields the Sikorsky SH-60B (S‐70B‐1) Seahawk helicopter as its primary rotary-winged anti-submarine warfare and anti‐surface warfare type. Twelve such helicopters are flown from navy frigates in these roles. It also fields SH-60F, Bell AB212, MD 500, and Sikorsky SH-3D helicopter types.

The State Department approval does not constitute a sale, or even that a type selection has been made. Any deal must first be signed off by the US Congress before a contract can be issued. Should the deal go ahead, Spain would join Australia, Denmark, Greece, India, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, and the United States, as operators of the MH-60R, with more than 300 helicopters in service between them.
