Slovakia selects Patria AMV XP wheeled armoured vehicle

Slovakia has selected the Patria AMV XP as its new 8x8 armoured combat vehicle. (Patria)

Slovakia has selected the Patria 8×8 Armoured Modular Vehicle (AMV) XP, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) and Finnish company announced on 30 March.

The Slovak MoD said on its website that the government had mandated it to conclude a contract for the procurement of 76 AMV XPs with the Finnish government. The ministry valued the government-to-government agreement at EUR447 million (USD493 million), including logistics, ammunition, and infrastructure. Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď said the AMV XP would replace infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs) that are at the end of their service life amid growing operational demands on the Slovak Armed Forces' readiness and would be intoperable with NATO systems, fulfilling allied commitments to create a heavy mechanised brigade.

Patria said in a press release that the Slovak government's decision was based on bids submitted at the end of 2021 and vehicle and weapon tests conducted in February 2022. The vehicle testing was conducted at the Military Technical and Testing Institute in Záhorie, northwestern Slovakia. The Slovak MoD said the bids were evaluated by a project team of 60 of its experts, plus more experts from the Economics Ministry and industry.
