Pentagon budget 2024: USCG requests slight decrease

The US Coast Guard (USCG) is requesting about USD13.5 billion in its fiscal year (FY) 2024 budget proposal, compared with the USD13.9 billion enacted in FY 2023, according to USCG budget documents.

The FY 2024 budget requests USD10.2 billion for Operations and Support (O&S) and USD1.6 billion for procurement, construction, and improvements (PC&I).

Funding requested by PC&I includes USD1.2 billion to recapitalise legacy assets and make capital improvements to extend the service life of cutters and boats, such as the following: USD579 million for construction of the sixth Offshore Patrol Cutter (OPC) and long-lead time materials for the seventh OPC; USD170 million to provide long-lead time materials for the third Polar Security Cutter (PSC); USD125 million to acquire a commercially available polar icebreaker; USD98 million for the Waterways Commerce Cutter (WCC) including project management, initial detail design, and the construction of the first article; USD55 million to fund initial acquisition activities, programme management, and prepare for the procurement of long-lead time materials for a heavy Great Lakes Icebreaker; and USD17 million to support post-delivery activities and programme management for the tenth and eleventh National Security Cutter (NSC).

The requests also include funding for the following: USD115 million to recapitalise and sustain fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft, including sustainment of the current MH-60T helicopter fleet; modernisation and sustainment of MH-65 helicopters to extend service life into the 2030s; and continued missionisation of HC-27J medium-range surveillance aircraft.
