Hensoldt to provide updated TRS-3D radars for new Norwegian Coast Guard ships

German systems and sensors house Hensoldt has been contracted to provide the Norwegian Coast Guard’s next generation of patrol ships with an upgraded version of the company’s TRS-3D/16 G-band multimode air/surface surveillance radar.

Three new Arctic Coast Guard vessels are being procured under Project 6615 to replace the Norwegian Coast Guard’s three aging Nordkapp-class ships. Vard Langsten was awarded a contract in June 2018 worth more than NOK5 billion (USD582.28 million) by the Norwegian Defence Materiel Agency (NDMA) to deliver the vessels between early 2022 and early 2024. The ice-strengthened hulls will be built at Vard Tulcea in Romania.
The three Nordkapp-class ships, commissioned in 1981–82, are already equipped with an earlier version of the TRS-3D/16 radar together with identification-friend-or-foe (IFF). Under an NDMA contract worth more than EUR20 million (USD22.74 million), Hensoldt will remove, recondition, and upgrade these systems for reinstallation on the new ships.
According to the company, the three TRS-3D radars will be updated to embody the latest solid-state technology and signal-processing software. The radar fit will also incorporate the MSSR 2000 I IFF interrogator system, including Mode S/5.
Hensoldt will redeliver the upgraded radars from 2021 to align with the construction of the new coastguard vessels. The contract also includes an option for the upgrade of the TRS-3D radar and IFF system installed on the coastguard patrol ship Svalbard .
