The Bundesamt für Ausrüstung, Informationstechnik und Nutzung der Bundeswehr (BAAINBw), Germany's Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support, has awarded Rheinmetall a contract to upgrade the Fuchs (Fox) 1A6A1 nuclear, biological, and chemical (NBC) reconnaissance vehicle to the new highly protected A8A7 configuration, the agency and company announced in separate press releases on 21 September.

Five Fuchs 1A6A1 NBC reconnaissance vehicles will be upgraded starting this month, with the first vehicles to be handed over to the Bundeswehr in 2023 and work to be completed by July 2024.

The BAAINBw said the upgrade would involve improving the vehicle's ballistic and mine protection, installing an FLW 200 remote weapon station, and modernising its nuclear and chemical reconnaissance equipment. In addition, the data processing and communication system will be updated with special software to control the vehicle's nuclear and chemical reconnaissance equipment and command and navigation systems. The vehicle's current nuclear and chemical equipment for dismounted employment will also be integrated and stowed.

Rheinmetall valued the contract, which includes spare parts and tools, at the low double-digit million euro level.
