Russian Navy announces multiple exercises

The Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) announced on 21 January that it had received direct notification from the Russian Navy that the service intends to carry out live artillery and missile firing to the southwest of Ireland at the beginning of February.

“There will be a need to issue a notice to commercial pilots to warn them of this issue and there will be a closure of airspace,” it stated.

Update: Swedish corvette HMS Gävle completes mid-life upgrade

The first of two remaining Royal Swedish Navy (RSwN) Gävle (ex-Göteborg)-class corvettes, HMS Gävle (K22), has been returned to service following the completion of its life-extension refit and upgrade, the Swedish Armed Forces has announced.

Gävle was formally handed over to the RSwN's Fourth Naval Warfare Flotilla at Berga Naval Base in Sweden on 4 May.

Japanese anti-submarine frigate collides with minesweeper off Yokosuka

A Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) Abukuma-class anti-submarine guided-missile frigate has collided with the service's lead Uraga-class mine-countermeasures vessel (MCMV) in waters off Yokosuka.

Janes has been informed by a source close to the matter that the collision took place at about 1545 h local time on 22 May while the frigate, JS Jintsū
