Germany is supplying Ukraine with 50 Dingo armoured vehicles and two more Mittleres Artillerie Raketen System (MARS) multiple rocket launchers (MRLs), German Federal Minister of Defence Christine Lambrecht said at Bundeswehrtagung (armed forces meeting) 2022 in Berlin on 15 September. She said Germany would provide Ukraine with 200 rockets for training on the MRLs, which are a European upgrade of the M270 Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS), according to Land Warfare Platforms: Artillery and Air Defence.

This follows Lambrecht's announcement at the 15 June meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group in Brussels that Germany would transfer three MARS II launchers and Guided MLRS (GMLRS) rockets from Bundeswehr stocks to Ukraine. The United States is supplying Ukraine with the M142 High-Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) and GMLRS munitions and the United Kingdom is donating MLRS launchers with GMLRS munitions. The US and UK have not specified how many MRLs they are providing in addition to the initial four HIMARS and three MLRS systems they announced in June.

QinetiQ has exhibited the Talon 6 explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) robot for the first time at the Defence Vehicle Dynamics (DVD) 2022, the British Army's biennial defence industry exhibition, held at the Millbrook Proving Ground from 21 to 22 September.

As the name would imply, the Talon 6 is the latest in the Talon series of EOD unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) developed by QinetiQ, which were previously used widely in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Janes understands that the Talon 6 was developed during the past 24 months in response to requirements from several states, and is being tested by a number of NATO members.

Speaking at DVD 2022, a spokesperson for QinetiQ confirmed that the vehicle would be put forward for procurement under project Dartrose, the British Ministry of Defence's (MoD's) programme for the acquisition of medium EOD UGVs. Janes reported in August that the MoD intends to acquire 50 medium EOD robots under the programme.

Richard Smart, Senior Responsible Officer for Joint Effects at British Army Headquarters in Andover, outlined plans to increase both the capability and numbers of M270 Multiple Launch Rocket Systems (MLRSs) in the UK service on the second day of the Defence Vehicle Dynamics (DVD) 2022 event held at the Millbrook Proving Ground from 21 to 22 September.

Smart said that the first MLRS had gone for refit and overhaul and would be emerging shortly with significantly increased capabilities. With a stated intent of “one launcher, many effects”, he outlined a number of avenues of investigation currently under way. These include acquiring rockets with a range of 150 km and potentially the Precision Strike Missile, which would extend the range to 500 km.

Horiba Mira is to deliver two Viking unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) in an intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition, and reconnaissance (ISTAR) configuration to the British Army in 2023, Janes has learnt.

Speaking to Janes at the Defence Vehicle Dynamics (DVD) 2022 – the British Army's biennial defence industry exhibition – Andrew Maloney, chief engineer for defence and UGVs at Horiba Mira, confirmed that the vehicles will be delivered as part of the British Army's efforts to establish a robotic autonomous systems (RAS)-enhanced brigade by 2025.

Horiba Mira signed the contract for the vehicles with the Ministry of Defence (MoD) in January 2022, with final deliveries anticipated by spring 2023. The payloads, which Janes understands are in the process of integration onto the Viking platforms, include air and ground radars, day and night cameras, and laser rangefinders.
