The Luftwaffe formally received into service its first Airbus A321neoLR passenger aircraft during a ceremony at the ILA Air Show on 23 June.

The event, which was attended by senior officials from the German Ministry of Defence (BMVg), the Luftwaffe, Airbus, and Lufthansa Technik, saw the handover of the first of two aircraft to be used for medium- to long-haul liaison and aero-medical evacuation (medevac) duties.

Previously designated A321-251NX, these aircraft were contracted in July 2020 with the first being rolled out in September 2021, ahead of receiving its mission fit from Lufthansa Technik.

The two aircraft will come with a variety of cabin configurations depending on the nature of the particular role being flown. These will comprise passenger transport of between 136 and 163 people, and medevac of up to six stretchered patients or up to 12 ‘mildly ill' patients. The underfloor hold can be utilised for cargo in both configurations.
