Fincantieri held a steel cutting ceremony for the second Logistic Support Ship (LSS) on order for the Italian Navy at its yard in Castellammare di Stabia shipyard near Naples on 20 July.

Fincantieri is building the second LSS under a EUR410 million (USD418 million) contract awarded by the Organisation for Joint Armament Cooperation (OCCAR) on behalf of the Italian Ministry of Defence (MoD) on 20 December 2021. The deal includes an option for a third ship.

Under the terms of the contract, the latest LSS is expected to be delivered by 2025, joining first-of-class Vulcano (A 5335), which entered service in 2021.

The LSS programme – which is managed by OCCAR on behalf of the Italian and French MoDs – has grown to include six ships since its launch in 2014: two for Italy and four for France.
