New Zealand plans P-8A deployment to enforce North Korea sanctions

New Zealand has said that it will deploy a Boeing P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft to Japan for the first time in support of UN Security Council (UNSC) sanctions on North Korea and assist with the monitoring and surveillance of illegal ship-to-ship transfers by Pyongyang.

The deployment will see the P-8A conduct maritime surveillance and reconnaissance patrols “over international waters looking for violations of the sanctions resolutions, including illicit ship-to-ship transfers of banned goods such as oil and coal”, said Rear Admiral Jim Gilmour, commander of the Joint Forces New Zealand, on 10 April.

According to the Japan Ministry of Defense (MoD), the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) P-8A will operate from Kadena Air Base in Okinawa from mid-April to early May.

The deployment comprises several “firsts” for the RNZAF's P-8As, according to the Air Component Commander, Air Commodore Andy Scott.

Romanian Navy to field Marte ER missile from ASuW-capable H215M helicopters

Romania is to carry the MBDA Marte Extended Range (ER) anti-ship missile from its soon-to-be-received Airbus H215M helicopters.

The European missile house said on 23 May that it had signed a contract with IAR Brasov to support the integration of the Marte ER onto Romanian Naval Forces H215M helicopters.

News of the contract came months after Airbus Helicopters confirmed to Janes in January that it would supply the Romanian Naval Forces with a pair of H215M helicopters, as per a European Union (EU) notification posted at the time.

“We can confirm that our partner IAR has signed a contract with the Romanian Navy for the H215M, but we have not signed the contract yet on our side with IAR. Negotiations are ongoing,” Airbus Helicopters told Janes on 30 January. While there has been no subsequent contract notification, the MBDA announcement indicates that this sale has now been finalised.

Textron partners with dual-use AI company for UGV demonstration

One of defence vehicle manufacturer Textron's unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) will be equipped with dual-use artificial intelligence (AI) company Kodiak's autonomy stack for a new product, the companies announced on 20 May.

Although both companies have contracts on the UGV US Army programme Robotic Combat Vehicle (RCV), this integration effort is totally separate and will produce a new technology for customers with greater autonomy than waypoint navigation, said Don Burnette, Kodiak's co-founder and CEO, while speaking with Janes ahead of the announcement.

The integration, culminating in a demonstration for customers in the third quarter (Q3) of fiscal year (FY) 2024, will demonstrate integration speed, said David Phillips, senior vice-president of Textron's land and sea systems business. The company is not revealing the name of the UGV to publicise its debut at the demonstration later this year.

Türkiye receives new early warning radar from Aselsan

The first Aselsan ALP-300G long-range early warning radar was formally handed over to the Turkish Armed Forces during a ceremony on 20 May, Türkiye's Defence Industry Agency (SSB) announced on the same day.

ALP-300G is a new portable early warning active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar, which can be deployed and assembled on tactical wheeled platforms, according to the company.

Aselsan had not responded to Janes regarding the radar's capabilities at the time of publication.

The radar is the rebranded ERALP transportable early warning radar that Aselsan describes as a rapidly deployable, long-range, S-band AESA radar, which uses gallium nitride in its transceiver modules. Multiple systems can be combined into a single cohesive radar system.

ERALP comprises an 8×8 vehicle that carries the antenna and several other vehicles, which presumably carry the command post, generator, and communications equipment.
