US Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) is to begin evaluating bids for the development of an open architecture shipborne electro-optical/infrared system (EO/IR) designed to provide passive surveillance, detection, and cueing in support of ship self-defence.
Industry proposals for the Shipboard Panoramic Electro-Optic/Infrared (SPEIR) system were required by 19 July. The US Navy (USN) plans to initially fit the system on Aegis platforms (DDG-51 Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyers, CG-47 Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruisers, and FFG-62 Constellation-class frigates).

The UK Royal Air Force (RAF) and the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) stood up their respective 80 Squadrons on 17 April to serve as US-based data units for the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter (JSF).
Announced by the RAF, the two separate but linked squadrons were reconstituted during a joint ceremony at Eglin Air Force Base (AFB) in Florida.

Members of the House Armed Services Seapower and Projection Forces Subcommittee raised concerns about the proposed US Navy (USN) plan to pare down key shipbuilding programmes on 17 April during the subcommittee hearing on the USN's Fiscal Year (FY) 2025 budget request.

Alaskan Senator Lisa Murkowski asked US naval officials to show “robust” support for platforms and facilities for Arctic-related operations on 16 April during a Senate Appropriations Committee (SAC) hearing.
In particular, Murkowski asked for greater support for the US Coast Guard's (USCG's) Polar Security Cutter (PSC) programme and the effort to create a naval port facility in Nome, Alaska.
