JADC2 strategy, posture review in final stages

by Carlo Munoz

The policy underpinnings for the United States Department of Defense’s Joint All-Domain Command and Control (JADC2) initiative are in the final stages of review by senior department leaders, with the end product due to Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin within the near term.

The overarching strategy will codify lines of effort among the services and within the department, in terms of co-ordination and contributions to the JADC2 initiative, said Joint Staff Chief Information Officer and US Marine Corps Lieutenant General Dennis Crall.

An unclassified version of the strategy has been completed and is awaiting Pentagon and Joint Staff approvals, Lt Gen Crall said. The classified version of the pending strategy will include details on JADC2 initiatives dealing with command and control systems for the US nuclear arsenal, he added. Classified and unclassified versions have been briefed to Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Mark Milley, and are being prepared to be briefed to Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks, in preparation for final approval by Defense Secretary Austin.

Iraq is to equip its Lockheed Martin F-16 Fighting Falcon combat aircraft with the L3Harris AN/ALQ-211 Advanced Integrated Defensive Electronic Warfare Suite (AIDEWS) electronic warfare (EW) system, the US Department of Defense (DoD) disclosed on 22 April.

The DoD requires the retrofit of the AIDEWS system into 34 Iraqi Air Force (IqAF) F-16C/D Block 52M aircraft located at Martyr Brigadier General Ali Flaih Air Base (Ali Flaih AB [AFAB], previously known as Balad Air Base), a solicitation posted on the SAM.gov US government procurement website said.

The DoD solicitation provided no contract value or timeline details.

The AIDEWS comes in both an AN/ALQ-211(V)4 integrated and an AN/ALQ-211(V)9 podded configuration, with the newer Block 52 and above aircraft of operators such as the IqAF having the internal space needed for integration, while older block aircraft do not and therefore, require the podded system.

The IqAF fields 24 single-seat F-16C and 10 twin-seat F-16D aircraft, deliveries of which commenced in 2014.

The USN intends to operate 64 of the Textron King Air 200-based aircraft, which will replace the Textron T-44 as the service's main twin-engine pilot training aircraft. Deliveries are set to run through 2026, and the aircraft is meant to operate until 2055.

“This aircraft brings modernised training to student naval aviators and prepares them for the advanced aircraft they will fly in the fleet,” said Captain Duane Whitmer, USN programme manager.
