South Korea aims to launch indigenous solid-propellant space-launch vehicle by 2023

South Korea plans to develop and start operating a new space launch vehicle by 2024 from its Naro Space Center in Goheung County, the Ministry of National Defense (MND) in Seoul disclosed on 16 September.

The announcement comes after the country's Agency of Defense Development (ADD) carried out successful combustion tests of a new solid-propellant rocket engine on 29 July.

The planned space launch vehicle will be used to place small satellites or multiple ultra-small satellites into low Earth orbit, increasing South Korea's space-based defence capabilities, noted the MND, pointing out that the indigenous development of such technologies only became possible after the lifting of restrictions under the US-South Korea missile guidelines agreement.

On 7 September South Korea's Ministry of Science and Information and Communication Technology announced that it intends to support know-how transfers to private local companies to promote the development of the domestic space-launch vehicle market.

Airbus, UK MoD cites Zephyr trials success on path to ‘operationalising pseudo satellite'

Airbus and the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) have lauded the success of the most recent flight trials of its Zephyr unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), saying that the campaign over the third quarter of 2021 ‘represent an important step towards operationalising the pseudo satellite'.

On 11 October, the manufacturer of the Zephyr and its chief military customer said that the July and August flight trials out of Arizona in the United States had seen the high-altitude pseudo-satellite (HAPS) achieve several world firsts on its path to being declared ready for operations in the foreseeable future.

US Army evaluates DroneGun MKIII C-UAV system

DroneShield's DroneGun MKIII handheld counter-unmanned aerial vehicle (C-UAV) system has undergone an evaluation at the US Army's Yuma Proving Ground in Arizona to gather feedback that will be used to improve the technology in the coming months, the company told Janes .

DroneGun MKIII is a 2 kg pistol that can neutralise individual platforms or swarms of drones in various domains using a radio frequency (RF) disruption approach.

The evaluation took place over the course of a week in late September and was organised by the army's Joint Counter-UAS Office (JCO).

The trials involved “various scenarios the [US] army had scripted for benchmarking the systems in a real-world environment with real-world test cases”, said Matt McCrann, the company's vice-president of sales.

Australia approved to buy further MH-60R helos

The US government has approved the follow-on sale of Lockheed Martin MH-60R Seahawk maritime helicopters to Australia.

The US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) announced on 8 October that the State Department had given the green light to the prospective sale of 12 MH-60R anti-submarine warfare (ASW)/anti-surface vessel warfare (ASuW) helicopters for an estimated USD985 million. Further to the helicopters, the approval covers spares, mission equipment, weapons launchers (although not the weapons themselves), training, and support.

“This proposed sale will improve Australia's capability to perform anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare missions along with the ability to perform secondary missions including vertical replenishment, search and rescue, and communications relay,” the DSCA said.
