Lockheed Martin reveals LMXT offering for USAF KC-Y tanker competition

Lockheed Martin has revealed the LMXT aircraft that it is to bid for the US Air Force (USAF) KC-Y tanker competition, also known as Bridge Tanker.

Disclosed on 17 September, the LMXT will be a US-built and USAF-specific version of the Airbus Defence and Space (DS) A330-200 MultiRole Tanker Transport (MRTT) aircraft that is borne out of a teaming arrangement between the two companies, which was first announced in December 2018.

“The LMXT complements the US Air Force's tanker capabilities by providing the most advanced aerial refueller to meet America's immediate and long-term mission requirements. The LMXT strengthens and expands the US aerospace-industrial base by working with existing and new American suppliers. The LMXT also cultivates and sustains high-tech, high-skill American manufacturing jobs,” Lockheed Martin said.

Image shows PLANAF JH-7A armed with upgraded YJ-83K ASM

An image has emerged on Chinese online forums showing a People's Liberation Army Naval Air Force (PLANAF) JH-7A fighter-bomber armed with a new variant of the YJ-83K anti-ship missile.

The image, which was published on 13 October, shows the aircraft carrying a new YJ-83K-series missile, although the designation of the new variant was not disclosed.

So far, only two missiles from this series were known to be in service: the YJ-83K, which has a stated range of 180 km, and the YJ-83KH, which has a stated maximum range of 230 km.

The new ASM variant reportedly features an integrated active radar/passive imaging infrared dual-mode seeker.

A ship-launched version of this missile variant – known by the export name CM-802B – is known to be deployed with some PLA Navy vessels. However, the recently published image marks the first time that an air-launched version of the missile has been spotted.

No information was provided about when or where the image was taken.

Australia loses MH-60R helicopter in Philippine Sea mishap

The Royal Australian Navy (RAN) has lost one of its MH-60R Seahawk helicopters in a mishap over the Philippine Sea.

The helicopter was conducting a “routine flight overnight” from the Hobart-class air warfare destroyer HMAS Brisbane at the time of the incident, the Australian Department of Defence (DoD) announced on 14 October.

Brisbane is on a regional deployment with the Anzac-class frigate HMAS Warramunga .

The helicopter conducted an emergency landing in the water in the midst of this operation, and all three crew members onboard the aircraft have been rescued with minor injuries.

Brisbane and Warramunga are continuing to search the area for any debris from the ditched aircraft, which will aid in determining the cause of the incident, said the DoD.

“With the aircrew safe, investigating the circumstances that led to the helicopter-ditching is the priority at the moment,” said Commander of the Australian Fleet, Rear Admiral Mark Hammond, in the DoD announcement.

AUSA 2021: General Micro Systems unveils new artificial intelligence server

Tactical server manufacturer General Micro Systems unveiled its newest, high-powered server designed specifically to operate and support the plethora of advanced artificial intelligence (AI) technologies and applications set to flood the battlefield in the coming decades.

The company's Velocity 4×4 General-Purpose Graphics Processing Unit (GPGPU) tactical server is patterned after a similar tactical server deployed aboard the US Navy's P-8 Posiedon multimission maritime patrol and reconnaissance aircraft, chief technology officer Chris Ciufo said.

“Most servers out there use two processors ... it is unusual to have four processors” since the processing power required to support most tactical-level, edge computing demands can be met with a dual-processor server, General Micro Systems' chief information officer Chris Ciufo said during an interview at the Association of the United States Army's (AUSA's) annual symposium in Washington, DC.
