Global Military Products unveils new mobile mortar variant

A larger version of the Scorpion mobile mortar launcher will be displayed for the first time at the Maneuver Warfighter Conference on 15 September, according to a Global Military Products statement on 14 September.

The Scorpion Medium is a 120mm mobile mortar system mounted on an Infantry Squad Vehicle-Utility (ISV-U) and carries 16 mortar rounds, according to the statement. The US Army s buying the Scorpion Light 81mm mobile mortar system, according to a 3 September Global Military Products statement.

The medium variant weighs approximately 1,400 lbs [635 kg], nearly 500 lbs [226 kg] more than the Scorpion Light. It is more similar to the light than the heavy version, which weighs about 2,000 lbs [907 kg], said James Knight, director of business development, told Janes on 11 September.

Scorpion Heavy is a 120mm mobile mortar system mounted on a Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV), Knight told Janes in 2025.

Both light and medium variants are electric unlike the pneumatic system of the heavy, he said. There is about 95% parts commonality with the light version, according to Global Military Products.

However, the Scorpion medium does include a larger non-seating baseplate and mortar barrel copied from the heavy variant, according to the Global Military Products statement.

The baseplate enables firing from multiple surfaces, including concrete or paved ground, according to the statement. It has autonomous targeting and auto-lay capabilities, and it takes approximately 10 seconds to emplace and displace using a single button.

The fire control on the mobile mortar system “significantly accelerates” target acquisition, digital fire mission processing, and engagement of multiple targets, according to the statement.
