OCCAR, acting on behalf of the DGA, has ordered four more SAMP/T NG (Next Generation) firing units from Eurosam. (DGA)

The Joint Organisation for Armament Cooperation (OCCAR), acting on behalf of the Direction Générale de l'Armement (DGA), the French defence procurement agency, ordered four more SAMP/T NG (Next Generation) firing units from Thales-MBDA joint venture Eurosam, OCCAR and Eurosam have announced.

The DGA said in its announcement on its website on 21 October that the order would increase the number of firing units in the Armée de l'Air et de l'Espace (French Air and Space Force, AAE) to 12, 10 of which planned to be delivered before the end of 2030. Eurosam said in a press release on 22 October that the SAMP/T NG firing units would be delivered in a multi-layer Aster/MICA VL configuration. It added that the system is designed to be used with Aster 30B1 and Aster B1NT missiles and will be able to offer a multi-layer capability through integration and coordination of short- and very short-range air defence assets.

According to the DGA, SAMP/T NG will allow France to reinforce its air defence shield. Eurosam added that the SAMP/T NG order is another step towards the renewal of European land-based long-range air and missile defence capabilities.
