US Army selects GM Defense to build new Infantry Squad Vehicle fleet

General Motors (GM) Defense has successfully secured the US Army’s new Infantry Squad Vehicle (ISV) contract in a competition involving two other companies.

The service announced on 26 June that it has awarded the company with a USD214 million contract that will cover work until June 2028. This initial contract will cover the production of 649 vehicles, although the army’s current ISV acquisition objective is to acquire 2,065, GM Defense said.

The army decision follows a prototyping competition between GM Defense, Oshkosh Defense, and Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) during which each company was awarded with USD1 million, and tasked with building two ISV prototypes.

Each team was then slated to deliver their respective bid samples to the service by late 2019 for soldier assessments, testing, and evaluation ahead of a final contract award.

GM Defense’s ISV bid is based on the 2020 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 midsize truck architecture and leverages 90% commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) parts, including Multimatic dual spool-valve dampers and Chevrolet Performance suspension components.
