Maven Smart System achieves full operating capability with NATO

NATO's Maven Smart System (N-MSS) achieved full operational capability (FOC) on 22 June 2026, according to a 30 June press release from NATO's Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) .

N-MSS met all of Allied Command Operations' (ACOs') requirements and earned full security accreditation for use on classified networks. This provides full authorisation to operate NATO MSS “for everything, including exercises, missions and activities”, US Army Colonel Arnel David, director of Task Force Maven, said in the release.

Col David said on social media on 30 June 2026 that, over the course of 2025, more than 50 applications were built in and deployed across the entire operational force as part of N-MSS. Improvements were also made around data ontology for leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) models. “N-MSS is NATO sovereign-owned with NATO data on NATO servers in NATO data centres,” according to Col David's post. N-MSS is compliant with NATO standardization agreements (STANAGs). Earlier in June 2026, Col David posted on social media that N-MSS is compliant with STANAG 4774 and 4778.

The MSS is described by SHAPE as an AI-enabled platform that connects command and control systems across the NATO enterprise. It supports a number of AI models including from French company Mistral AI and US company Meta. MSS was “extensively” tested over the course of 2025 and during exercise Steadfast Deterrence 2026, which concluded at NATO's Joint Warfare Centre in Norway and other locations on 13 May. “We tested NATO MSS capabilities which automated scripting and opposition forces responses,” German Army Major-General Ruprecht von Butler said in the SHAPE release.
