Brazil commissions first locally built frigate, aims to acquire four more

On 24 April, the Brazilian Navy commissioned its first Tamandaré-class multi-purpose light frigate, F Tamandaré (F200), at the Naval Base of Rio de Janeiro.
On the same day, aboard the newly commissioned vessel, the Brazilian Navy, representing the Ministry of Defence, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Embraer and TKMS. This agreement outlines the potential acquisition of an additional four Tamandaré-class ships.
Four future Tamandaré-class ships are to include new and updated capabilities, Commander of the Brazilian Navy, Fleet Admiral Marcos Sampaio Olsen, told Janes.
A date for the contract to acquire these ships has not been determined, as negotiations with the contractor are still to be undertaken, according to Fleet Admiral Olsen.
F Tamandaré's armament includes a Leonardo OTO 76/62 Super Rapido 76 mm gun system; a Rheinmetall SeaSnake 30 remotely-controlled close-in weapon system armed with a 30 mm automatic cannon; two SEA TLS-TT triple torpedo launch systems for the RTX MK 54 lightweight torpedo; two Terma C-Guard decoy launch systems; two twin-mounted missile launchers for MBDA Exocet MM40 or SIATT MANSUP anti-ship missiles; the MBDA Sea Ceptor medium-range air defense system for the CAMM (Common Anti-Air Modular Missile) surface-to-air missile; and two FN Herstal Sea DeFNder remotely-controlled weapon stations armed with 12.7 mm machine guns, the Brazilian Navy told Janes aboard the ship on 24 April.
