British shipbuilder Babcock has launched Pelorus, a digital platform that gathers disparate data into one ecosystem to help establish fleet readiness, the company announced at the Euronaval 2026 exhibition, held in Paris from 3-6 November 2026.
Babcock's new digital platform brings design, build, operations, maintenance, logistics, and support data relating to individual platforms into a combined picture. Co-ordinated through a central command centre, Pelorus synchronises data from multiple systems and sources.
The company already use a foundational version of Pelorus. Babcock Marine CEO Nick Hine told Janes on 4 November that the company uses the capability for ongoing ship programmes. This includes build data for Type 31 general-purpose frigates besides some support data for the existing Type 23 class. He did not disclose the specific information captured and assessed, making it difficult to discern the newly launched platform from the system already used at its shipyards.
“We're still feeding [Pelorus] data. The more data we feed it, the better [it will] get, and then the more we'll expand the process,” Hine said.
Pelorus is intended to support platforms with real-time insight throughout their life cycle. The platform is particularly relevant as hybrid navy concepts combining manned and unmanned platforms emerge, according to a Babcock press release on 3 November. Pelorus can support whole fleets by bringing together datasets from individual platforms supported by different contractors, such as a frigate, an unmanned surface vehicle (USV), and an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV).
