The Brazilian Ministry of Defence (MoD) and the Brazilian National Confederation of Industry (CNI) have signed a joint technical co-operation agreement to further strengthen the local defence industrial base.

The six-year document signed in Brasília on 8 October by the MoD and the National Observatory of Industry of the CNI aims to map the possibilities and challenges for the sector and open commercial opportunities for Brazilian industry in national and international markets.

This partnership will make it possible to identify the defence and security needs of potential customers, the CNI said. For the domestic market, it seeks to promote greater competitiveness and prioritise local production to meet the demands of specific organisations, such as the armed forces and federal and state security agencies.

Minister of Defence José Múcio Monteiro Filho revealed on 8 October that Brazilian defence industry broke export records in 2024, reaching USD1.6 billion in sales through that date, surpassing 2023's figures of USD1.4 billion, and equalling the historic level recorded in 2021.

Currently, the Brazilian defence industrial base generates, directly and indirectly, 2.9 million jobs and represents 3.58% of gross domestic product (GDP).

A total of 235 companies are part of the Brazilian defence industry ecosystem, offering around 1,700 products and solutions, according to the MoD.
