DSEI 2019: FFG presents Boxer Armoured Recovery Module
Flensburger Fahrzeugbau Gesellschaft (FFG) presented its Armoured Recovery Module (ARM) for the Boxer multi-purpose armoured vehicle at the DSEI 2019 exhibition in London.
Christoph Jehn, a project manager for FFG, explained to Jane’s that the module was developed as a private venture from 2017 in co-operation with Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW). The company had noticed Boxer users struggling to recover stranded vehicles, Jehn added.
The module is designed to enable the recovery of stricken Boxers and other armoured fighting vehicles and can also be used to remove or install a Boxer mission module onto a drive module. This is what potential customers would expect the mission module to be capable of, Jehn ventured.
The ARM is based on an armoured hull and requires just two personnel to operate it. It carries a crane with a 20-tonne lifting capability and can technically be operated independently of a drive module; all that is needed is a 28 V power supply.
The module was displayed at DSEI on a KMW drive module. While primarily targeted at the UK and Australian requirements, Jehn added that there was also a perceived need within the German Army.
The next step for the recovery module is to attain complete certification before it can be presented in earnest to potential customers.
FFG is responsible for maintaining the German Army’s fleet of Boxer vehicles and so has extensive experience with the platform.
