India's Larsen & Toubro (L&T) and BAE Systems have started production of BvS10 ‘Sindhu' articulated all-terrain vehicles (AATVs) for the Indian Army. A ceremony to mark the formal start of production was held at L&T's Armoured Systems Complex in Hazira, Gujarat, on 28 October.
The initial production batch comprises 18 vehicles, ordered by the Indian Army in November 2025. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in March 2027. L&T is manufacturing the vehicles under licence, with technical and design support from BAE Systems Hägglunds, the original manufacturer of the BvS10.
The vehicles are intended for Indian Army operations along the country's northern and western borders with China and Pakistan, including at altitudes of up to 18,000 ft (about 5,500 m).
The variants covered by India's initial order have not been publicly specified. The wider BvS10 family includes configurations for troop transport, command and control, ambulance, logistics, repair and recovery, and fire support.
Speaking to reporters at the ceremony, Arun Ramchandani, senior vice-president and head of precision engineering at L&T, said, “I am sure [the vehicle] will be inducted in large numbers beyond this initial contract.”
He added, “The Indian Army has indicated that this vehicle can be inducted in various roles and quantities. The army has not spelt out the exact numbers, [but] we do see that as it gets inducted [the vehicle] will get deployed in much larger numbers going forward.”
Ramchandani said L&T's Armoured Systems Complex had been upgraded with automated processes to support wider production of the vehicle.
