Israel is to increase the range of its Lockheed Martin F-35I Adir combat aircraft with domestically developed external fuel tanks.

Israel's Ministry of Defence (IMoD) announced on 14 May 2026 that it has contracted Elbit Systems' subsidiary Cyclone to develop, build and integrate externally-carried fuel tanks for the F-35I based on those it had previously developed for the Lockheed Martin F-16 Fighting Falcon.

“The new capability is expected to extend the aircraft's operational range, reduce reliance on aerial refuelling, and enhance operational flexibility across long-range missions,” Elbit Systems said, adding, “This contract is part of the IMoD's broader force buildup strategy, led by Defence Minister Israel Katz and Director General Major General (Reserve) Amir Baram, to strengthen Israel's readiness for an intense security decade ahead and maintain the country's aerial and strategic superiority in the region.”

The contract is valued at NIS100 million (USD34 million). Neither the IMoD nor Elbit Systems disclosed a delivery timeline.

No further details pertaining to the form or size of the new external tanks were disclosed. However, in terms of form they will presumably have low-observable (LO) shape and coatings so as to preserve the stealth characteristics of the F-35I, while in terms of size Cyclone previously developed 600 gallon drop tanks for the F-16.
