Germany has launched an airborne laser demonstrator programme with the goal of establishing the technological foundations for future laser weapons onboard Luftwaffe aircraft.

MBDA Deutschland said on 2 November 2026 that it had been contracted by the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) to undertake the demonstrator effort.

“The contract now awarded stipulates that key components of the so-called Laser-Pod are already designed for later flight operations. This is intended to verify the feasibility of an airborne laser weapon and lay the foundation for future operational capability with the Luftwaffe,” the company said, adding, “In expert circles, the development of an airborne laser is considered a particularly demanding ‘supreme discipline' of laser weapon technology – especially because of the extreme requirements in terms of size, weight and resistance to flight conditions. In the future, such systems should be able to defend against drones and cruise missiles in particular.”

MBDA Deutschland said that the order that has now been placed provides for essential components of the so-called laser pod to be designed for later flight operations. It did not disclose a contract value or timeline for the project.
