The tactical unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) market has reached an inflection point where traditional, platform-focused providers are beginning to both compete and co-exist with new, software-led entrants.
Leading industry figures from Europe, the Middle East and North America, have confirmed to Janes the scale of the disruption caused to the tactical UAV market by the entry of such companies as Anduril, Helsing, Quantum Systems, and Stark Defence. But sources added that the sector is not yet saturated.
The tactical UAV market is moving away from a “hardware-centric industry toward an increasingly software-defined model in which data, autonomy, interoperability, and speed of innovation determine how effectively systems perform on the battlefield,” said a company spokesperson for Quantum, the German technology company providing a range of intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) UAVs.
“That is particularly true for unmanned systems, where operational requirements can change within weeks or even days. The strongest players will not be purely hardware or purely software companies. They will be able to integrate both,” the spokesperson added.
Today, Quantum's “strategic priority” is to build the next generation of software-defined autonomous systems that can be deployed at scale and continuously evolve based on operational experience.
A key part of that strategy, according to the spokesperson, is combining operational learning from Ukraine with the company's in-house innovation teams.
“We develop our own platforms, AI capabilities and our Mosaic UXS software ecosystem, while working closely with our Ukrainian partners to continuously translate frontline experience into faster product development and system improvements”, the spokesperson said.
But this holistic approach has not stopped Quantum from building alliances with legacy UAV providers in Ukraine and Western Europe.
